Called to Watch: A Biblical Call to Protect the Vulnerable
A reflection on God’s call to His people to remain vigilant, protect the vulnerable, and confront the darkness of exploitation with courage and prayer.
DALLAS, TX—In every generation, God raises shepherds — not only pastors, but parents, intercessors, and community leaders. Scripture repeatedly warns us to be vigilant against wolves who seek to harm the flock.
Jesus said, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). This is not just about spiritual deception. Evil often manifests through systems of exploitation that prey upon the weak.
Throughout the Bible, we see how the righteous were called to resist assimilation into corrupt systems: Daniel refused the king’s food (Daniel 1:8), Esther exposed plots against her people (Esther 7:3–4), and the early church cared for widows and orphans (James 1:27).
Today, human trafficking is one of the clearest examples of this same darkness. It infiltrates communities, even churches, when shepherds do not watch. But God’s people are called to do more than condemn evil — we are called to actively protect, advocate, and shine light where others close their eyes.
Closing reflection:
Let us pray for the courage to be watchful shepherds, ready to act. Let us stand in the gap for those most vulnerable and live as people who reflect the Shepherd’s heart for justice.
