Spiritual Blind Spots: When We Choose Not to See

Evil thrives when good people look away. This article explores how spiritual blindness enables injustice and how the Church is called to open its eyes, speak truth, and defend the vulnerable.

When we think of injustice, it is easy to imagine it as something “out there” — happening in dark alleys, distant countries, or hidden corners of society. But history and Scripture remind us that evil often flourishes most where people choose not to see it.

Jesus frequently rebuked the Pharisees, calling them “blind guides” (Matthew 23:16). They claimed to lead others in truth, yet ignored the very weightier matters of justice, mercy, and faithfulness. Spiritual blindness isn’t about the eyes in our heads, but the choices of our hearts.

In the fight against human trafficking, this blindness shows up when communities ignore warning signs, when churches dismiss survivors, or when individuals assume “this doesn’t happen here.” In reality, trafficking networks thrive precisely because too many people would rather look away.

The Bible warns us not to close our ears to the cry of the oppressed: “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute” (Proverbs 31:8). Silence is not neutral — it empowers the trafficker and abandons the victim.

Faith calls us to courage, not convenience. To open our eyes, even when what we see is painful. To let God’s light expose what evil wants to keep hidden. And to act, not just in prayer but in advocacy, protection, and justice.

Ask the Lord to reveal where you — or your community — may have spiritual blind spots. Learn the signs of trafficking. Choose to see what others ignore. Because when the Church refuses to look away, it becomes the light that darkness cannot overcome.
