Devotional – While Shepherds Watched

0

The shepherds at Bethlehem remind us of heaven’s call to vigilance. In every generation, God seeks true shepherds who will watch and protect, not look away. This devotional is both a comfort and a challenge to stand guard over the flock entrusted to us.

Scripture Reading:

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them…”

— Luke 2:8–9

When Christ was born, the first to hear heaven’s announcement were not kings or officials, but shepherds keeping watch. They were ordinary people, doing their job faithfully, when heaven opened and angels declared good news.

But Scripture also warns us about another kind of shepherd — leaders who turn their heads, who see danger and do nothing, who watch evil unfold but choose silence instead of courage. When threats to the vulnerable are real, some shepherds simply look away.

Yet, just as in Bethlehem, heaven does not look away. Angels come. They intervene. They fight for life and for deliverance when earthly shepherds fail. Remember the parents of Christ did not plan for their child to be born in a manager. They also did not plan to escape a tragedy where a king tried to have their baby killed by ordering the death of male children two years and younger.

For something like this to have happened at all, for there to be leaders in power in Israel that were a part of this plot, somewhere along the way, earthly shepherds failed. Yet, heaven did not look away. Angels came. They intervened. They appeared in person. They appeared in dreams. They rescued the people who were close to their hearts and close to God’s heart.

This is both a comfort and a challenge. God will never abandon His people. But He is also calling His shepherds — pastors, leaders, intercessors, parents — to be vigilant, courageous, and willing to act. Watching is not enough. We must watch and protect. We must watch and warn. We must watch and fight for the ones entrusted to us.
